AMES, Iowa ? Marquis Gilstrap recorded a career-high 25 points and Craig Brackins posted the 21st double-double of his career (16 points/12 rebounds) in Iowa State's 87-68 win over Bradley Sunday afternoon in Hilton Coliseum.
ISU, which improves to 8-3 on the season, shot a torrid 59.6 percent from the field in the rout of the Braves. It was the sixth time this season the Cyclones shot 50 percent or better from the field, improving the Cyclones' record to 14-0 in the Greg McDermott era when making over half of their shots from the floor.
"The first half was as well as we played all year," ISU head coach Greg McDermott said. "Defensively our rotation was good. We were able to make their looks at the 3-point line challenged and I thought we were able to plug some gaps in their dribble penetration. We got some turnovers and turned them into offense."
Iowa State took command early, forging an 18-6 lead with 11:06 left in the first period. Brackins and Diante Garrett each had five points in the opening moments.
The Cyclones mixed up their defense by playing a 1-2-2 3/4 ?court trap and falling back to a 1-3-1 zone in the halfcourt. The experiment worked, as ISU was able to get some steals which led to easy baskets.
The Braves scored six-straight points to cut the lead to 18-12, but ISU answered with a huge 26-4 run over the next eight minutes to go ahead 44-16. Charles Boozer came off the bench to ignite the Cyclones, scoring seven points in the rally. Gilstrap also had nine points in run.
ISU went into the break with its largest lead at the half this year at 44-19. Gilstrap had 12 points and seven boards at intermission, as the Cyclones shot 59.4 percent from the field in the first half.
Chris Roberts scored the first seven points of the second half for Bradley to cut ISU's lead to 45-26 with 17:12 left in the game. However, ISU put the game out of reach with a 13-3 run to make it 59-29 with 11:54 remaining in the game.
Brackins, who was 6-of-8 from the floor, led the Cyclones with a career-high seven assists. Scott Christopherson added 11 points from the bench.
"Our fans are going to see Marquis continue to grow with each passing game," McDermott added. "It's simply because the guy has not played a lot of basketball."
The Cyclones won the rebounding battle at 34-28.
Next up for the Cyclones is a 7 p.m. matchup vs. North Dakota on Tuesday in Hilton Coliseum.
