AMES, Iowa?An All-American at Florida, Ames native Megan Kerns joins the Iowa State soccer coaching staff as a volunteer assistant.
Kerns, who was drafted by the newly created Women's Professional Soccer's St. Louis Athletica in January, comes to Iowa State after amassing an impressive resume on the Florida soccer team. Kerns closed out her Gator career at the NCAA Championship in the round of 16 and racked up a number of individual accolades. She was a SoccerBuzz.com third-team All-America selection, named to the All-Southeastern Conference (SEC) first team, garnered All-Southeast Regional honors and was a member of the SEC All-Tournament team in her senior campaign.
Iowa State head coach Wendy Dillinger is excited about how Kerns can help the Cyclones.
“Megan has played at a high level and it is great to get a player of her caliber from the area,” Dillinger said. “She is going to raise the level of play in the spring and send a good message to our team as to what it takes to compete at that level. She is going to be a good role model for our team.”
The former Gator led Florida in points (35), goals (13), game-winning goals (five) and was tied for first in assists (nine) as a senior. She ended her career ranking eighth on the Florida career points list with 62 tallies. Kerns also garnered academic honors during her collegiate career as she was a 2007 Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar second-team selection and was on the 2006 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District second team.
Kerns is looking forward to returning to her hometown.
“It is a great opportunity for me to get to work at a university of this caliber and work with the team and share what I know,” Kerns said.
