LAKEWOOD, Calif. ? BYU scored four second-inning runs and Christie Zinanti tossed a four-hit shutout as the Cougars defeated Iowa State, 5-0, Friday afternoon at the Mayfair Tournament hosted by Long Beach State.
The Cougars (8-9) got a leadoff double from Jessica Purcell and an RBI single from Caschjen Davis to open the scoring in the second inning. Three more runs scored on two errors and a passed ball by the Cyclones, giving the Cougars a 4-0 lead that they would not give up.

BYU tacked on an insurance run in the fifth to make it 5-0.
The Cyclones left runners base in the sixth and seventh innings and Zinanti finished with five strikeouts in the game as the Cougars won for the second game in a row.
Rachel Zabriskie (7-2) took the loss for the Cyclones, allowing five runs while striking out seven. Four of the runs Zabriskie allowed were unearned.
Carrie Monroe had a double to extend her hitting streak to four games. Kelsey Kidwell and Amanda Bradberry also had hits in the game for ISU, which was out hit for just the fourth time this season.
