AMES, Iowa- The Iowa State tennis team fell by a 5-2 score to Kansas in Big 12 play Saturday afternoon at the Ames Racquet and Fitness Center. The Cyclones are now 8-4 overall and 1-2 in Big 12 conference play.
In No.1 singles play, ISU's Erin Karonis earned a 6-0, 6-3 win over Kansas' Edina Horvath. ISU sophomore Liza Wischer fell for the first time in singles play this season to KU's Maria Martinez, 7-5, 6-4. Wischer's record is 11-1 this season.
“It's a tough one,” ISU head coach Armando Espinosa said. “We had our chances and we just couldn't capitalize. We had opportunities, and they are a good team. We competed well, though.”
Iowa State earned the doubles point winning, two of three matches. In #2 doubles ISU freshmen Maria Fernanda Macedo and Marie-Christine Chartier recorded an 8-1 victory over Kansas' Alessandra Dzuba and Yuliana Svistin. Cyclones Tessa Lang and Liza Wischer came back to win 8-3 over Jayhawks Erin Wilbert and Kunigunda Dorn.
The Cyclones will play at Baylor Saturday. ISU will play at Texas Tech on March 22.
