AMES, Iowa? The Iowa State soccer team has been diligently preparing this spring for its 2009 season. Now, the Cyclones know what foes they are getting ready to face. The 2009 slate is highlighted by two lengthy home stands and matches against the best the country has to offer in Big 12 action.
After a match at Creighton Aug. 21, Iowa State opens up the 2009 home campaign with four-consecutive games at the ISU Soccer Complex. The Cyclones start their season against South Dakota State on Aug. 28 at 7 p.m. Montana (Aug. 30), DePaul (Sept. 4) and Wisconsin-Green Bay (Sept. 6) round out Iowa State's season-opening home stand.
“It is a huge advantage to be at home our first two weekends,” Iowa State head coach Wendy Dillinger said. “It allows us to gain confidence and consistency. It is unlike last year, when we started with two long road trips.”
ISU hits the road for its next six matches that include visits to Iowa and Drake and the beginning of Big 12 Conference action.
“Playing Drake and Iowa will give us a good chance to gain experience going on the road before we go into conference play,” Dillinger said.
After three-straight weekends away from Ames, the Cyclones return home for six-consecutive home matches. Oklahoma State is the first Big 12 foe to meet the Cyclones at the ISU Soccer Complex, when the Cowgirls visit on Oct. 2 at 7 p.m. Northern Iowa (Oct. 4), Oklahoma (Oct. 9), Baylor (Oct. 11), Texas A & M (Oct. 16) and Texas (Oct. 18) round out the Cyclones' 2009 home slate.
“Having three-straight conference weekends at home will be a huge advantage for us as well,” Dillinger said.
After the Oct. 18 home match against Texas, Iowa State will spend the rest of the 2009 regular season on the road. Trips to Missouri (Oct. 23), Kansas (Oct. 25) and Nebraska (Oct. 30) are set for the Cyclones' regular season. The Nov. 4-8 Big 12 Championship in San Antonio, Texas marks the first chance the Cyclones have for postseason action in 2009 before the NCAA Tournament begins on Nov. 13.
