AMES, Iowa - The Iowa State tennis team fell 6-1 to Texas Friday afternoon at the Ames Racquet and Fitness Center. The Cyclones are 8-7 this season overall and 1-4 in the Big 12 Conference.
Iowa State's doubles pair of Liza Wischer and Tessa Lang pulled out an 8-5 win over the Texas duo Amanda Craddock and Sarah Lancaster. The No. 1 doubles duo of Cyclones Erin Karonis and Kara Hickey fought for the doubles point against Longhorns Krista Damico and Marija Milic, but lost in a 9-7 match.
In singles play, Karonis recorded a win over Longhorn Caroline Larsson, 6-3, 7(7-1)-6. Iowa State's Liza Wischer put up a great fight in her first game against Texas' Sarah Lancaster, but was defeated in a tie-breaker 7(7-4)-6, 6-1.
“We competed really well,” said ISU head coach Armando Espinosa. “I felt like we had our chances but they're a good team and they took advantage of it. It's good to see that Erin Karonis is continuing to win.That should give her confidence for the upcoming matches.”
The Cyclones will continue play Saturday at 3:30 p.m. against Texas A&M. Texas A&M is ranked 36th nationally and has a record of 7-6.
ISU will compete again next weekend in Ames against two Big 12 teams. On April 3 Iowa State will play host to Oklahoma beginning at 6 p.m. The Cyclones will play host to Oklahoma State on April 4 at 3:30 p.m.
