AMES, Iowa ? Iowa State University will play host to the NCAA Last Chance Qualifier this weekend at the Lied Recreational Center. Competition will be at an all-time high as runners from all over the nation go head-to-head for NCAA qualifying marks. A number of Iowa State track and field athletes will be competing in this weekend's final home meet.
“It's a chance for some of our athletes to have another chance to qualify for the NCAA meet,” Iowa State head coach Corey Ihmels said. “It will be a select group that will compete this week since a lot of our kids are coming off the Big 12 Championship. (Our meet) is one of the premiere last chance meets in the country, so there should be some really good competition.”

Field events will begin at 10:30 a.m. with the women's weight throw, and running events begin at 11:25 a.m. with the women's 60-meter hurdle prelims. The featured race of the day will be the women's and men's 4x400-meter relays, which are scheduled to start at 3:45 p.m. and 4:00 p.m., respectively.
“I think everybody comes to our last-chance meet to get their 4x400-meter team qualified,” Ihmels said. “I wouldn't be surprised if a majority of qualifiers for the national meet in another week will be from our meet. That's exciting and it's great that we can have such a high caliber meet on our campus.”
Some of the top teams in the nation will be making the trip to Ames this weekend. The meet will pit 11 out of the top-15 men's squads in the nation, including top ranked Oregon, second-ranked Arkansas, and third-ranked Florida State. The women's side will include top-ranked and Big 12 indoor champions Texas A&M, along with three other top-five nationally ranked teams.
Teams competing from the state of Iowa include Drake, Iowa, Northern Iowa, Cornell, Central and Wartburg. Big 12 North rivals Kansas, Colorado, Nebraska and Missouri will also have athletes competing.
Two of Iowa State's track and field members will be traveling to South Bend, Ind., for the Alex Wilson Invitational at the University of Notre Dame on Friday. Junior Kiel Uhl and sophomore Guor Marial will be competing in the 5,000-meter race.
“I just really want to give Kiel (Uhl) and Guor (Marial) another opportunity to run the 5,000-meters,” Ihemls said.
This will be the Cyclones' final tune-up before the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships. The meet will be held March 13 and 14, in College Station, Texas at the Gilliam Indoor Track and Field Stadium.
