COLUMBIA, Mo. ? The Iowa State tennis team put together a solid team effort, but came up just short, falling at Missouri 4-3 in Big 12 action Sunday. The loss wrapped up the Cyclones' regular season with a 10-12 overall record and 1-10 mark in the conference. ISU's 10 wins are its most since the 1996 season.
Cyclones claimed all three of their points in singles play. At the No. 1 single spot, ISU sophomore Erin Karonis defeated Mizzou senior Jessica Giuggioli, 6-0, 6-3. In No. 3 singles play, ISU's Maria Fernanda Macedo recorded a 6-0, 6-4 win over UM's Mallory Weber. Iowa State freshman Marie-Christine Chartier also earned a win at the No. 4 slot, defeating Missouri freshman Danielle Day, 3-6, 7-5, 6-4.
“We fought very hard but came out short,” said Iowa State head coach Armando Espinosa. “Mizzou wanted it just a little more than we did and they found a way to win. I was very proud of how we competed, though.”
The Cyclones will take the No. 11 seed into Big 12 Championship and will face No. 6 seed Oklahoma State on Thursday at 1:30 p.m. The Big 12 Championship will be held Thursday through Sunday at Headington Family Tennis Center in Norman, Okla.
