AMES, Iowa - Iowa State head volleyball coach Christy Johnson announced today that Johnston's Taylor Knuth will join the Cyclones in 2009. Knuth, a 6-2 right side hitter/middle blocker, led Johnston to three consecutive state tournament appearances, including a championship in 2007.
“We are very excited Taylor has decided to join our program,” Johnson said. “She has a tremendous amount of potential, works very hard and comes from a very athletic family that understands what it takes to succeed in college athletics at a high level. She's a smart player and understands the game very well. One of Taylor's strengths is her blocking, she puts up a huge block, and she will give us great depth at our middle and right side positions.”
Knuth, a first-team all-state selection the last two seasons, averaged 2.50 kills and 0.80 blocks as a senior. She finished her career as Johnston's career leader for hitting percentage (.353), blocks (407) and sets played (410).
As a junior, Knuth was named the Des Moines Register's Player of the Year in addition to being named the most valuable player of the state championship match.
Knuth played club volleyball for IPVA under the direction of Arlie Brandmeyer and Cyclone volunteer assistant Joe Lynch in 2007 and Makani Cantor in 2008.
Knuth's father, Jim, played football for Iowa State (1979-82) and her mother Dawn (Wumkes) played basketball at Drake (1980-84).
