AMES, Iowa? Five juniors from the Iowa State soccer team took time between summer school classes and training to participate in a VERB Assembly at Fellows Elementary School June 1.
VERB is an Iowa State initiative aimed at promoting physical activity among youth ages 8-13. The organization is run by ISU Human Health and Performance professor Greg Welk. The program is structured so that Cyclone student-athletes encourage participation in various activities throughout the summer including hiking, canoeing, soccer, kickball, running and sports clinics.
At the event, the Cyclones introduced themselves to the elementary school students and spoke to them about the importance of staying fit and the benefits of an active lifestyle.
“We attended the VERB Assembly to promote physical activity for kids in the community,” Lauren Fader, senior captain for ISU said . “We talked to them about what our ?VERB' is- to encourage an active lifestyle.”
The ISU women handed out Frisbees and passed out fliers with information about VERB.
“I think it's really important to support programs like VERB because they get kids up and moving instead of sitting on the computer or playing video games,” Fader said.
Senior Adrianna O'Neill also attended the event.
“VERB is a great program because it encourages kids to become active at a young age,” O'Neill said.
O'Neill commented on the position of being a role model for the youth in the community.
“The kids really look up to you as a college athlete,” O'Neill said. “It's a great feeling to know they're really interested in what you have to say.”
