IOWA CITY, Iowa? For the first time this season the Iowa State soccer team trailed, and it proved costly as the Cyclones fell 2-0 to Iowa Friday evening at the Iowa Soccer Complex.
The Cyclones had become accustomed to taking an early lead this season, as they had taken a 1-0 advantage in their past six matches. However, Iowa (6-2) started the scoring at the 17:43 mark when Keli McLaughlin got behind the Iowa State (4-1-3) defense. McLaughlin fired in a low shot on the one-on-one breakaway.
“We came out sluggish in the first half,” ISU head coach Wendy Dillinger said. “We didn't come out the way we have all year.”
The Hawkeyes took their one-goal lead into the intermission and also carried an 8-4 shots advantage. Iowa also held a 4-2 corner kick edge at the break.
Iowa extended its lead to 2-0 after Alexandria Seydel converted a penalty kick 16:40 into the second half. The Hawkeyes were rewarded the penalty kick after ISU was whistled for a handball in the penalty area.
The Cyclones tried admirably to claw back into the match but could not find the back of the net.
Iowa outshot Iowa State 11-9, with a 5-2 shots-on-goal edge. The Cyclones held a 6-4 corner kick advantage.
“We came out the second half on fire and took it to Iowa,” Dillinger said. “We had three really good scoring opportunities that we just couldn't finish. We battled hard the second half.
“Tonight will be good preparation for conference play which starts next weekend."
Freshman Jordan Wagner led the Cyclones with three shots, one of which was on frame. Senior goalkeeper Ann Gleason played the full 90 minutes and recorded a pair of saves.
The Cyclones return to action Sunday for another in-state tilt when they travel to Des Moines to face Drake. The match is scheduled to start at 1 p.m. at Drake Stadium.
