MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. ? 12th-ranked Iowa State hit .328 to sweep George Washington, 3-0 (25-18, 25-18, 25-15), in the opening match of the Diet Coke Classic Friday evening at the Sports Pavilion on the campus of the University of Minnesota.
Victoria Henson recorded her first double-double of the season, finishing with a match-high 13 kills to go along with 10 digs to lead the Cyclones (4-0). Rachel Hockaday had 10 kills and no errors while also recording a double-double with 10 digs. Kelsey Petersen hit a career-high .450, notching 10 kills and just one error on 20 swings.
Debbie Stadick also had a good night offensively, hitting for a season-best .320 with nine kills.
Ashley Mass led the Cyclones on defense with 19 digs while Minnesota native Diane Kieger had two solo blocks and two block assists to go along with three kills in her return home.
ISU out blocked the Colonials (3-1), six to two, and held them to just a .111 hitting percentage to hand them their first loss of the season.
The Cyclones committed just two attack errors to hit .419 in the opening frame and take the set 25-18. Hockaday had four kills to lead ISU in the first set while Mass had four digs as the Cyclones held George Washington to a .161 hitting percentage in the set.
In the second set, ISU trailed 8-7 and eventually took the lead for good at 10-9 before going on to take the set 25-18. It was the Henson show with the junior racking up eight kills on 11 swings to lead the attack. Mass had a strong set as well, notching 11 digs.
The third set was all ISU, which won 25-15 despite hitting just .244 in the set. The Cyclones held a 9-6 edge before going on a 9-3 run to break open the set.
George Washington was led by 10 kills from Katie Butz, who hit .321 in the contest.
Iowa State held a 59-45 edge in digs and has yet to be out dug by an opponent this season.
The Cyclones will be back in action Saturday at 1 p.m. against Auburn.
