AMES, Iowa?A superb strike from senior Amanda Nimtz with 4:37 remaining sent the Iowa State soccer team into the winners' column Sunday afternoon at the ISU Soccer Complex, as the Cyclones downed Wisconsin-Green Bay 2-1.
With the win the Cyclones (3-0-2) become the first team in program history to start a season undefeated after five matches.
Nimtz's goal came 8:11 after Green Bay's Nicole Dooher leveled the affair against the run of play.
“It showed good character to fight back,” ISU head coach Wendy Dillinger said. “It shouldn't have gotten to that point, but it shows good character. I am happy the team fought back.”
For the second-consecutive match, the Cyclones opened the scoring in the first four minutes. Senior Lauren Fader headed the ball into the net after a long free-kick over the Phoenix defense from senior Elisa Berzins just 1:18 into the game.
Iowa State would take its 1-0 lead into the break.
The Cyclones would continue to control the match in the second half and created multiple quality scoring opportunities. However, Iowa State could not capitalize on the chances.
It appeared as though the Phoenix (1-3-0) would force overtime after their 78th minute equalizer. However, Nimtz beat a pair of Green Bay defenders at the top of the penalty area before unleashing a powerful drive into the upper corner of the far post.
“It was a great goal,” Dillinger said. “She had some looks earlier on, so it was great she put one away. She didn't dance around to try to get into the box. Instead, she saw she had a shot and took it.”
For the match, Iowa State had a clear statistical advantage. The Cyclones outshot the Phoenix 20-8 and held a 12-4 shots-on-goal edge. Iowa State had four corner kicks to Green Bay's two.
ISU goalkeeper Ann Gleason played the entire 90 minutes and recorded her third win of the season. Gleason made three saves.
Iowa State begins a long series of away matches Friday when they take on Eastern Illinois in Charleston, Ill. at 5 p.m.
