AMES, Iowa - The No. 10 Iowa State Cyclones hit a season high .441 in their 3-0 win (25-16, 25-16, 25-18) over the Texas Tech Red Raiders Wednesday night. Senior Victoria Henson paced the Cyclones (11-3, 4-2 Big 12) with 17 kills.
"Offensively it was a pretty nice night for us," Iowa State head coach Christy Johnson-Lynch said. "Hitting .441 is pretty good."
Although on fire on the offensive end, Carly Jenson added 10 kills and Kelsey Petersen had six and redshirt freshman Hannah Johnson tied a career-high two kills on the night, Johnson-Lynch wished she'd seen more from the Cyclones on the defensive end.
"I felt like we struggled slowing down a couple of players that they get the ball to a lot. We didn't execute very well in our blocking, and we should have been able to contain some of their players better. I'm not pleased with our blocking on the night but I thought that was the best we served and passed all season and we hit for a high percentage."
Texas Tech (3-13, 1-6 Big 12) put up a fight coming off their first conference win in 65 tries against Kansas on Saturday but didn't have the energy to keep up with Iowa State after the Cyclones drew ahead by six, up 16-10 in the third and decisive set.
Even when Iowa State appeared to have put away a set, the Red Raiders came back.
Texas Tech put up a late fight in the first set, refusing to just roll over for the Cyclones. Down 23-10, the Red Raiders went on a 5-0 run to get within eight before the Cyclones got a set point off a block assist by Hannah Johnson and Kelsey Petersen. Carly Jenson finished the set for Iowa State with her fourth kill of the set.
Hanging with the Cyclones again in the second set, Amanda Dowdy kept the Red Raiders on track before Iowa State built a five-point lead the visitors couldn't recover from. Iowa State went on a 4-0 run to lead 20-11 and never looked back, winning the set 25-16.
The Cyclones take to the road again Saturday in Lawrence, Kan. for a 6:30 p.m. first serve against the Jayhawks.
