AMES, Iowa - The No. 16 Cyclones (18-7, 11-6 Big 12) ended their two match losing streak on Tuesday night, taking down the Colorado Buffaloes (6-18, 3-15) in straight sets (25-13, 25-9, 25-22) in front of 2018 at Hilton Coliseum.
"We had a nice offensive rhythm tonight," Iowa State head coach Christy Johnson-Lynch said. "Alison [Landwehr] set some nice tempo for balls tonight, our outsides hit really well and we were able to create quick chances for our middles, which was something we have not done well lately. Defensive effort, I thought, in games one and two was pretty good."
Iowa State overwhelmed Colorado from start to finish, getting out to 5-0 starts in each of the first two sets and allowing Colorado only nine points in the second set, the lowest number of points by an Iowa State opponent in a single set this season.
Colorado made a push for a fourth set, staying within six of the Cyclones in set three and getting as close as two, down 22-20, before Iowa State put the brakes on the comeback and finished the sweep, 25-22.
"We talked about first contact on free balls and I thought we did a great job with that passing right to targets," Johnson-Lynch said. "We got really sloppy in game three."
On the night, Iowa State had 20 more assists (42/22) than Colorado and boasted 43 kills to the Buffaloes' 24. Colorado had a tough night at the net, not recording a block until the third set.
Once again, Victoria Henson led the Cyclones in kills with 15 and libero Ashley Mass recorded 20 digs, the 41st match in her four year career Mass has had at least 20 digs in a match.
The Buffaloes were led by outside hitter Kerra Schroeder who had a Colorado team high 13 kills. None of Schroeder's teammates had more than six kills.
In game one, the Cyclones racked up 13 kills to the Buffaloes' six on their way to a 1-0 lead.
Things only got better for Iowa State in set two as the team hit .400 with 14 kills while holding the Buffaloes to another six kills. Heading into the locker rooms, the Buffaloes' defense had yet to post a block and trailed the Cyclones in digs, 33-23.
The Cyclones are back on the road this weekend, traveling to College Station, Texas to take on the Aggies at 2 p.m. on Sunday Nov. 21.
