COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The No. 16 Cyclones (19-7, 12-6 Big 12) trailed 19-10 in the fourth set but came back to beat the Texas A&M Aggies (13-15, 7-11) in four sets Sunday, 25-23, 16-25, 25-17, 25-23.
Junior Kelsey Petersen had a career day all around Sunday with a career-high 14 kills in 29 attempts, another career high. With one error in the match, Petersen hit a personal-best .448 and completed the day with three digs, another career-best.
Senior Victoria Henson led all the Cyclones with 16 kills while tying Ashley Mass with a team-high 15 digs. The match marked the 11th double-double of the season for Henson.
Setter Alison Landwehr also posted her 11th double-double of the year with 48 assists and 13 digs.
Defense was a large factor throughout the day as Iowa State collected 11 blocks and the Aggies recorded 12 as a team. Debbie Stadick tied her career-high in block assists with seven and set a personal-best with two solo blocks.
For only the fifth time this season, Iowa State lost the digs battle, 73-69. The Cyclones are 2-3 this season when trailing in digs.
The Aggies helped the Cyclones cause in set one, committing seven attack errors and three service errors as the game went down to the wire. The Cyclones led 23-20 before A&M pushed back to tie the score at 23.
Falling behind early in set two, the Cyclones were unable to overtake the Aggies who hit .297 en route to a 25-16 win to even the match score at one apiece.
After halftime, Iowa State came out with more energy, grabbing 16 kills in 37 attempts while committing five attack errors (.297). Allowing only one lead change in the game, the Cyclones rolled to a 25-17 victory and took the 2-1 match lead.
On Wednesday, the Cyclones will travel to Lubbock, Texas to face the Texas Tech Red Raiders at 6:30 p.m.
