AMES, Iowa - Iowa State libero Ashley Mass had 31 digs and outside hitter Victoria Henson added 24 kills but the No. 12 Cyclones (17-6, 10-5 Big 12) were unable to close the door on the Missouri Tigers (17-8, 9-6) in the first volleyball match played at Hilton Coliseum this season, falling in four sets (25-19, 24-26, 22-25, 24-26) on Saturday night.
Mass' 31 digs and Henson's 24 kills are season-highs for both players. Henson also had 24 points on the night, leaving her just two and a half points shy of second all-time at Iowa State for points in a career.
The Cyclones led the Tigers in kills, digs, blocks, assists and points but were unable to shut down Missouri kills-leader, Paola Ampudia who put up 22 kills and 11 digs, most of them coming at key moments in the match.
"I thought that we were really tentative at the end of each of the games," Iowa State head coach Christy Johnson-Lynch said. "The games we lost were all really close and it shows that we have to play well at the end of the games and we were tentative when that happened."
A close match throughout, the two teams shared 17 ties but Missouri's key was only allowing four lead changes, none in the Iowa State's first-set win.
Setter Alison Landwehr posted her 10th double-double of the year with 55 digs and 13 digs, tying her career-high total in digs.
Behind 22 digs and three total blocks, the Cyclones forced the Tigers to .026 hitting in game one and had 16 kills on their way to a 25-19 score.
The Cyclones saved three set-points by Missouri in the second game before Julianna Klein's attack landed just inside the back line to give the Tigers the 1-1 tie.
Game four started close as the teams traded points and tied five times before Missouri took the final lead at 18-17 and finished the set for the win, 25-22.
It looked like Iowa State would even the match at two sets apiece in the fourth but Missouri's kills leader, Paola Ampudia, brought her team back and the Tigers took the set and the win, 26-24.
The Cyclones are back in action next Saturday at Oklahoma at 7 p.m.
