CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - Northern Iowa's Jake Koch made a clutch jumper with less than a minute left which broke a tie game, as UNI escaped with a 60-54 victory over Iowa State Wednesday night at the McLeod Center.
Iowa State fought back to tie the score at 52-52 with just over a minute left in the game, but Koch's jumper and clutch free-throw shooting down the stretch by the Panthers kept the Cyclones from mounting a comeback. The loss drops Iowa State's record to 6-1 and UNI improves to 3-2.
UNI controlled the pace in the first half despite falling down by nine points early (14-5). Diante Garrett got the Cyclones rolling with a variety of jumpers.
The Cyclones then went cold, allowing the Panthers to creep back into the game. UNI ended the half on a 16-8 run to go into the break with a 26-25 advantage. Iowa State shot just 28.6 percent in the opening stanza, led by Garrett's 13 points.
Garrett finished the game with 17 points to lead the Cyclones, followed by 14 points from Jake Anderson. The Cyclones had their worst shooting outing of the season, making just 33.3 percent of their shots from the floor.
Iowa State regained the lead just once in the second half, playing catch up most of the way.
Christopherson added 10 points behind 2-of-5 shooting from 3-point range. He has made a 3-pointer in 10-straight games dating back to last season.
UNI made 20-of-23 shots from the free-throw line.
The Cyclones are back in action on Saturday, facing California at 1 p.m. in Hilton Coliseum.
