WACO, Texas- No. 20 Baylor outboarded Iowa State, 24-11, in the second half to break open a close game in an 84-63 victory Wednesday night in Waco. The Bears registered 11 offensive boards in the second period and posted 18 second chance points to improve their record to 17-4 overall and 4-3 in league play.
ISU, which falls to 13-9 overall and 2-5 in Big 12 play, allowed an opponent to shoot above 50 percent from the floor, as BU made 53.1 percent of its shots.
“I thought we played the first half the way we wanted it to be played,” ISU head coach Greg McDermott said. “I thought we controlled the tempo. However, we turned it over early in the second half, settled for some jump shots and really got manhandled on the backboards in the second half.”
Iowa State jumped out to an early lead at 14-9 with 14:40 left before intermission, with Marquis Gilstrap totaling half of ISU's points up to that point.
The Bears then began their rally, going on a 13-2 run behind treys from LaceDarius Dunn and Tweety Carter to go up 22-16 with 10:00 minutes left before the break. However, ISU answered with three-straight buckets from Craig Brackins, Gilstrap and LaRon Dendy to knot the game at 22-22 at the 7:45 mark of the first half.
ISU grabbed a 3-point lead (33-30) after a Dominique Buckley runner with 2:20 left before the break, but the Bears went on an 8-1 run to end the half with a 38-34 lead.
A poor start to the second half was costly for the Cyclones. ISU made just on field goal in the first five minutes of the second period, falling behind 47-37. ISU tried to get back into the game after spotting the Bears with a 15-point lead, as Diante Garrett hit a pair of treys to make it 59-49 with 8:24 remaining.
However, Dunn and Carter buried back-to-back treys to help BU forge a comfortable 65-49 lead with 6:16 left in the game.
ISU was led by Brackins, who had 19 points and seven boards. Gilstrap added 15 points for the Cyclones.
The Cyclones are back in action on Saturday, playing host to No. 10 Kansas State at 1 p.m. in Hilton Coliseum.
