AMES, Iowa- The Iowa State swimming and diving team came up just short on senior day, falling to Kansas 164-136.
“We won our fair share,” Iowa State head coach Duane Sorenson said “If we won the 50 free, the meet would have been a little closer. I was proud of our team competed and we accomplished what we wanted out of the weekend.”
It was a tough start to the day for the Cyclones as Abby Glaser was edged out be .01 seconds in the 50 freestyle by Kansas' Monica Johannessen.
“Abby losing the 50 free was disappointing, but we came back strong,” Sorenson said.
Iowa State rebounded in the 150 breaststroke as Jeli Nixt and Marley Suckow completed a 1-2 finish in the race.
“We wanted to go out more controlled and swim the race more even paced, instead of going out fast and holding on,” Sorenson said. “It was more of a strategy race.”
Nan Liu posted another victory, taking the 50 butterfly title. Iowa State wrapped up the meet by winning the 200 free relay.
In the diving well, Tien Tran and Meghan Proehl had another showdown, but this time it was the Cyclone who came out on top, with Tran posting a winning score of 313.43.
“Tien did really well today,” Iowa State diving coach Jeff Warrick said. “There was one dive which we are working on for her to be more consistent with. It is a pivotal dive on her list.”
Abby Christensen continued her increasing consistency, finishing third on 3-meter (268.95).
“It was definitely a good day for Abby,” Warrick said. “It was lower than her Nebraska score but it was still great to see another good score out of her. She stepped up again.”
The team will be back in action in two and a half weeks, when they meet their Big 12 counter parts at the conference championships. The event begins on February 24 at 6 p.m.
