Cyclones.com talked to fifth-year Iowa State head softball coach Stacy Gemeinhardt-Cesler and over the course of five days we'll be breaking down the upcoming season.
AMES, Iowa ? In the second edition of “Talking Softball with Gemeinhardt-Cesler”, Cyclones.com will talk about the options at catcher for the fifth-year head coach.
The catcher position is the spot with the least depth as only two players are true signal callers.
Fortunately for the Cyclones, one of those players is 2009 second-team All-Big 12 selection Alex Johnson, who has started the last two seasons for the Cyclones behind the plate.
Johnson, a senior from Raymore, Mo., is a .285 career hitter with 18 home runs. She needs to drive in just four runs to break the school record of 104, which was set by her catching predecessor Ashley Killeen (2004-07).
Johnson and pitcher Rachel Zabriskie have worked together almost exclusively the past two seasons, which is something that is expected to work in the Cyclones favor.
Backing up Johnson will be Amandine Habben, a freshman from Urbandale. Habben hit .365 with 24 RBI as a senior for the J-Hawks.
