AMES, Iowa- The Iowa State tennis team opened its Big 12 Conference home slate by defeating Missouri, 4-3, to put the Cyclones at 6-6 for the season and 1-1 in the league. The ISU win against Missouri was its first since 2002 and its second conference win in as many season after going six consecutive campaigns with out a Big 12 victory.
"Missouri is a great team and they fought so hard, I have to give credit to them," ISU head coach Armando Espinosa said. "It was a great match to be a part of. It was really great to take care of business at home. It was a great effort and I was very proud of our girls."
Maria Macedo picked up the first singles point of the day for Iowa State, quickly defeating Missouri's Mera 6-1, 6-4. Marie-Christine Chartier went 6-4, 7-6 against Missouri's Sofia Ayala, sending the pair to a tiebreaker that went back and forth before Chartier finished it with a score of 16-14. Jenna Langhorst won her first set against Maria Christensen 6-3 before falling 2-6 in the second. Langhorst came back to win the third set 6-4.
"It's the whole team," Espinosa said. "It's not fair to say that one person or another did more to help this win today."
With three singles points for Iowa State, play continued as Wischer faced Andrea Lewis in the No. 6 slot. Wischer picked up the win in the first set (6-2), before dropping the second set 7-5. Wischer fell behind (5-2) early, but came roaring back to beat Lewis 7-5 to clinch the Cyclones' win.
Erin Karonis fell to Kaitlyn Ritchie 6-2, 6-2. Tessa Lang dropped the first set, 6-2 and took the second set to a tiebreaker before falling, 8-6, in the tiebreaker to Mallory Webber.
Macedo and Lang started the day off strong, picking off Missouri's duo of Ayala and Jamie Mera, 8-4. The Cyclones dropped the remainder of the doubles with Karonis and Langhorst falling, 9-7, to Ritchie and Webber. Alyssa Palen and Wischer also dropped their doubles match, falling 8-5, to Kristen Bleakley and Christensen.
The Cyclones will take on the 52nd-ranked Colorado Buffaloes at 8:30 a.m. Sunday at the Ames Raquet and Fitness Center.
