AMES, Iowa- The Iowa State tennis team picked up its second Big 12 Conference win of the season Sunday morning when it defeated 52nd-ranked Colorado 5-2. With the win, the Cyclones improved to 7-6 on the season and 2-1 in the Big 12. ISU has already doubled its conference wins from a season ago and has won two league matches for the first time since the 2001 campaign, and only the second time in the history of the Big 12.
"Once again, it was a great team effort after our win against Missouri," head coach Armando Espinosa said. "I felt like the women came out and did a great job in singles."
Marie-Christine Chartier picked up the first win for Iowa State, defeating CU's Erin Sanders 6-2, 6-2. Maria Macedo picked off Abbie Probert 7-5, 6-3. Erin Karonis fell 6-2 in her first set, but fought back to win the second 6-4. Karonis went 6-3 in the third set to defeat #109 Melisa Esposito. With three singles wins for the Cyclones, Liza Wischer clinched the ISU win with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over CU's Madie Kern.
"Liza, once again, pulled off a great effort and clinched the meet for us," Espinosa said. "I think this win is another step in the right direction for the program. It's always good to see the hard work of our girls paying off and I am proud of them."
With the meet decided, doubles play kicked off with Macedo and Tessa Lang defeating the Buff's team of Ania Anuszkiewicz and Sanders, 8-6, in the No. 2 slot. Karonis and Jenna Langhorst fell 8-6 to Colorado's Esposito and Abbie Probert. Alyssa Palen and Wischer teamed up to clinch the doubles point for ISU with an 8-3 win over Michala Hedelund Jensen and Kern.
The Cyclones will continue their homestand Thursday when they face Cleveland State (7-7) at 9 a.m. and South Dakota (2-10) at 2 p.m. at the Ames Racquet and Fitness Center.
