ISU's road to the Sweet Sixteen wasn't easy, as the 12th-seeded Phoenix proved to be a formidable opponent. ISU only led for 2:17 of the game and made just 37.3 percent from the field, including a poor shooting night from its top two scorers Alison Lacey and Kelsey Bolte, who combined for 8-of-30 shooting from the field. However, ISU's experience plus a raucous Hilton Coliseum crowd of 6,498 was just enough in the end to push the home team over the hump.
Green Bay showed its muscle right off the bat by tallying the first 10 points of the game to go up 10-0 with 16:21 left in the first half. Kayla Tetschlag had eight of GB's 10 points behind a pair of 3-pointers.
Anna Prins finally got the Cyclones on the board with a 3-pointer to make it 10-3 with 15:59 left in the first half. ISU closed the gap to one-point (12-11) with 11:37 remaining in the first half, but a 10-1 run by GB again gave the visitors a 10-point advantage (22-12). Tetschlag had five pointers, including another trey, in the run.
Back-to-back baskets by Bolte and Lacey trimmed the lead to 22-16, but Tetschlag again answered with a conventional 3-point play to move the GB lead back up to nine points (25-16). It was still a nine-point GB lead with 2:10 left before the break until Bolte buried a deep trey and Jessica Schroll recorded a conventional 3-point play to cut the deficit to three points (32-29) and to give ISU new life.
It looked like the Phoenix was going to settle for a 3-point cushion at the break, but Stephanie Senson scored in Laettner-like fashion on a full court heave in the closing seconds to make it a 34-29 GB lead at intermission.
ISU shot just 33.3 percent from the field in the opening period, while Green Bay connected on 52.2 percent of its shots. Tetschlag had 18 first-half points to lead all players.
Tetschlag tallied two more hoops to push the Phoenix lead to eight points (45-37) in the early moments of the second half. ISU then went on an 8-0 run to tie the score at 45-45 with 11:18 left in the game. Bolte hit a trey and Lacey scored on a drive in the run.
Minutes later the Cyclones took their first lead of the game when Denae Stuckey rifled in a trey from the wing to make it 48-47 ISU with 9:03 left in the game. GB kept fighting, going on a 6-1 run to move back ahead 53-49 with just under six minutes remaining.
The see-saw battle continued, as the Cyclones regained the lead on a Chelsea Poppens lay-in off a nice feed from Lacey to make it 54-53 ISU with 2:46 remaining. The teams then traded 3-pointers, one from Tetschlag and then a huge answer from Bolte at the 1:11 mark to propel ISU back in front at 57-56.
The Cyclones had a chance to add to their lead, but Bolte misfired from the corner, giving the Phoenix the ball with 0:17 seconds left. GB's Celeste Hoewisch drove baseline and was forced out of bounds by the ball-hawking defense of Lacey, turning the ball over to the Cyclones with 0:04 seconds remaining. Bolte was promptly fouled, sinking both foul shots to push the lead to three points (59-56) with 0:03 seconds left. The Phoenix tried another full court pass, but this time Lacey intercepted it to seal the win.
Bolte finished the game with a team-high 15 points and Lacey added 12 points and seven assists in the win. Tetschlag led all scorers with 29 points.
