MANHATTAN, Kan.- Iowa State tennis team suffered another frustrating loss at Kansas State, falling 4-3, to put the Cyclones at 9-8 for the season and 2-3 in the Big 12 Conference.
"It's another heartbreaking loss," head coach Armando Espinosa said. "We were very competitive out there, but unfortunately we dropped some important points today and it didn't go our way. We just need to keep learning from it and put ourselves in the position to win matches."
The Cyclones got off to a strong start, sweeping the doubles matches. Erin Karonis and Jenna Langhorst took down Antea Huljev and Nina Sertic, 8-4, while Maria Macedo and Tessa Lang defeated Karla Bonacic and Petra Chuda (KSU) 8-6. Alyssa Palen and Liza Wischer picked up their fourth consecutive doubles win with an 8-6 victory over Carmen Borau Ramos and Ana Gomez Aleman.
Karonis picked up a gutty 7-5 win in the first set before dominating in the second with a 6-0 win to pick up the Cyclones' first singles win of the day. In the No. 2 slot, Macedo defeated Sertic 6-4, 7-6 (7-2) to put Iowa State up 3-2. The Wildcat's Aleman defeated Lang 6-2, 6-3 in the No. 3 slot, while Wischer fell 6-2, 6-4 to Chuda in the No. 6 slot. In the deciding match, Langhorst won the first set in a tiebreaker, 7-2, but dropped her second and third sets, 6-1, 6-1. Marie-Christine Chartier won her first set 6-2 with Ramos, before falling 6-4, 7-5, in the last two sets.
"It is unfortunate that it didn't happen for us this weekend," Espinosa said. "We are still young and inexperienced, we need to learn from these matches and keep moving forward.
The Cyclones will return home to face No. 43 Nebraska Friday, April 2 at 2:30 p.m.
