Cyclones Fall to Nebraska, 6-1

AMES, Iowa- The Cyclone tennis team suffered a Big 12 Conference loss Friday afternoon, falling 6-1 to No. 46 Nebraska, putting Iowa State at 9-9 on the season and 2-4 in the league.

"It was a tough match," head coach Armando Espinosa said. "Nebraksa is a very solid team, but I still feel like we competed really well."

The Cyclones started play with Alyssa Palen and Liza Wischer falling, 8-1, to Jennifer Holmberg and Mary Weatherholt before Erin Karonis and Jenna Langhorst fell, 8-5, to Madeleine Geibert and Stefanie Weinstein. Maria Macedo and Tessa Lang slid by Wiveca Swarting and Janine Weinreich, 8-7, after winning a tiebreaker, 7-3.

"We had our chances in doubles," Espinosa said. "We were leading in a few matches, we just didn't know how to close them out, which cost us in the end."

Wischer picked up the Cyclones' only win of the day in the No. 6 singles slot, defeating Holmberg 6-4 in the first set before falling 6-1 in the second, sending the pair to a tiebreaker in place of the third set. After going point-for-point with Holmberg, Wischer pulled ahead 11-9 to win the match.

"I am really pleased with Liza (Wischer) finishing up the way she did today, even though the match was already decided," Espinosa said.

In other singles action, Marie-Christine Chartier took a loss to Weinreich, 6-2, 6-3, while Lang fell 6-1, 6-4 to Swarting. Karonis dropped a 6-4, 6-3 decision in the No.1 slot against #74th-ranked Weatherholt. Macedo fell 6-4, 6-3 to Geibert and Langhorst dropped 6-2, 6-4 to Weinstein.

"We really need to get back to work to get ready for next Sunday," Espinosa said.

The Cyclones will return to action April 11, in Ames when they take on Texas Tech at 8:30 a.m.
