Tennis Drops 5-2 Decision to Texas Tech

AMES, Iowa- The Iowa State tennis team was again on the cusp of taking out another Big 12 Conference opponent, taking two singles matches to tiebreakers, before falling 5-2 to Texas Tech. The Cyclones dropped to 9-10 on the season and 2-5 in the league.

"We had great opportunities," ISU head coach Armando Espinosa said. "We dropped the doubles point and we just couldn't capitalize on our opportunities. We just need to learn to hold the lead and keep it going."

Maria Macedo and Tessa Lang teamed up to defeat Sandra Dynka and Elizabeth Ullathorne at No. 2 doubles, 8-4. Alyssa Palen and Liza Wischer fell , 8-6, to Stefanie Peana and Caroline Starck as Erin Karonis and Jenna Langhorst dropped an 8-6 decision to Kelsy Garland and Natalie Leitch.

In singles action, Tech's Ullathorne blanked Marie-Christine Chartier, 6-0, 6-0, before Wischer returned the favor, defeating Peana, 6-0, 6-0. Lang fell to Garland, 6-0, 6-2, as Karonis defeated Dynka, 6-2, 6-1.

Macedo took to the court in the number two singles slot, falling 6-4 to Leitch in the first set. Macedo took the second set to a tiebreaker before falling 8-6 to drop that match.

With the match decided in Tech's favor, Langhorst fell 6-2, in her first set to Starck before fighting back to win the second 6-2. In the third set, Starck delivered a 6-2 decision.

"We put ourselves in a position to win the match, but they came out and did a good job out hustling us," Espinosa said. "They ran down every ball. I have to take my hat off to Texas Tech. They really wanted this match and came out and took it."

The Cyclones will head south to face Texas A&M in College Station, Texas at 6 p.m. April 16, before heading to Austin, Texas, where they will face Texas at 2 p.m. April 17.
