Iowa State Slips in Big 12 Opener

WACO, Texas- The Iowa State tennis team kicked off Big 12 Conference play against No. 9 Baylor Saturday afternoon, falling 7-0 to put the Cyclones at 5-6 for the season.

"We played very well in doubles," head coach Armando Espinosa said. "All three team battled hard, but were not able to capitalize on the opportunities we had."

The Cyclones started doubles action with Erin Karonis and Jenna Langhorst falling to 11th-ranked Lenka Broosova and Csilla Borsanyi, 8-5. Alyssa Palen and Liza Wischer suffered an 8-4 loss to Karolina Filipiak and Taylor Ormond. Maria Macedo and Tessa Lang were also defeated by Nina Secerbegovic and Carla Lindlar, 8-5.

Karonis fell 6-2 in the first set against eighth-ranked Broosova, who won the second 6-1 to remain undefeated for the season in singles. In the No. 2 slot, Macedo suffered a 6-2, 6-2, loss to 41st-ranked Secerbegovic, who also remains undefeated this season. Langhorst also lost, 6-0, 6-2, to 53rd-ranked Borsanyi.

With the fate of the meet sealed, Marie-Christine Chartier fell 6-3, 6-1 to Filipiak. Tessa Lang fell 6-2 in her first set against Ormond. In the second set, Lang took a lead, but could not finish the job falling 7-5. Freshman Jasmine Lee earned a 7-5 win in her first set against Lindlar, but in the second set, Lee fell 6-4 to send the match to a tiebreaker in place of the third set, which Lee dropped 10-6.

"Baylor is a great team and they raised to a new level in singles play," Espinosa said. "Overall, I was pleased with our performance and it was a great team to face for the start of the Big 12 season."

The Cyclone tennis team will return home to face Missouri (2-5) at the Ames Racquet and Fitness Center Friday at 2 p.m.
