AMES, Iowa?Six members of the 2010 Iowa State soccer team will make the short journey from Ames to Ankeny this summer to play for the Iowa Rush in its debut season. The Rush is a member of the Women's Premier Soccer League (WPSL).
Senior Jordan Bishop, junior Mary Kate McLaughlin, junior Emily Hejlik, sophomore Kelsey Calvert, sophomore Megan Long and incoming freshman Natalie Hall will play for the Rush. McLaughlin, Hejlik and Hall are all from the Des Moines area.
Iowa State head coach Wendy Dillinger feels the opportunity for the Cyclones to play for the Iowa Rush this summer provides numerous positives.
“Playing with other top college players will allow our players to be in a highly competitive training environment and the games are also going to be at a high level,” Dillinger said. “(Rush Head coach) Eric Golz is a great coach and will help our players develop and be ready for our preseason camp in August. It is good for our players to play and train together but to also learn from players from other schools.”
Golz looks forward to the many different qualities the Cyclone players bring to the Rush.
“This is a very versatile group of Iowa State players, they are going to contribute on all parts of the field for us this summer," Golz said. "There are some very good attacking personalities, some very stout defenders and some players that can play in a variety of roles for us depending on team needs. I expect them to have a strong impact on our team throughout the summer.”
The Iowa Rush kicks off its season June 5 at 1 p.m. at the University of Iowa Soccer Complex against the Madison 56ers.
