Erin Green's early second-half goal gave the Iowa State soccer team a 1-0 win over Montana Friday evening at the South Campus Stadium to keep the Cyclones undefeated this fall. The Cyclone victory was also the 100th in the coaching career of
Wendy Dillinger. The Iowa State coach has a career record of 100-46-14, and she is in her ninth year as a head coach.
The Iowa State (2-0-1) defense continued its sterling play this season, as the Cyclones have only allowed one goal in three matches. The lone goal conceded by Iowa State was off a penalty kick.
“The defense has been solid all year,” Iowa State head coach
Wendy Dillinger said. “
Emily Hejlik and
Mary Kate McLaughlin have anchored the center of our defense.
Caitlin Graboski has done a great job in the defensive midfield to help stop the other team from penetrating.”
For the match, Iowa State outshot Montana (0-2-1) 15-9 and held a 7-0 corner-kick advantage. Green led Iowa State with five shots and three being on target.
“We moved the ball well, created good chances and finished one,” Dillinger said.
After a scoreless opening frame, Iowa State quickly got to work after halftime. Green scored in the third minute of the second half for her first collegiate goal. The goal continued the Cyclones' trend this season of scoring all their goals in the second half. Jessica Stewart assisted on the goal in her Cyclone debut.
“Erin (Green) definitely got the ball into dangerous positions around the goal tonight,” Dillinger said . “(Jessica) Stewart had a great run down the sideline and served a great cross into the box. Erin did a great job of capitalizing on it.”
The Cyclones had to deal with some early adversity as senior goalkeeper
Ashley Costanzo was substituted out before the match was five minutes old due to injury. Freshman
Maddie Jobe took over for Costanzo. Jobe went on to make four saves and improve her record to 2-0 on the season. Costanzo made two saves in her early duty.
“Maddie did a great job all night,” Dillinger said. “She came out and made a couple of point-blank saves.”
The Cyclones stay in Missoula for their next match, as they face Nevada Sunday at noon.
