OMAHA, Neb. - Ninth-ranked Iowa State suffered a 3-1 (22-25, 21-25, 25-10, 20-25) setback to No. 13 Florida Saturday afternoon in the Runza/AVCA Showcase at the Qwest Center. With the loss, Iowa State falls to 0-1 this season.
At the end of the day, the loss of the match may pale in comparison to the potential loss of preseason All-Big 12 selection Rachel Hockaday, who was injured in the first set with Iowa State leading 12-8. Hockaday missed the remainder of the match with a knee injury.
"Rachel suffered a knee injury in the opening set and they are still evaluating the injury," Iowa State head coach Christy Johnson-Lynch said. "Certainly when you have a knee injury it isn't usually a good thing. We'll just wait and see."
Hockaday was replaced by junior Carly Jenson, who played admirably and finished with eight kills on a .278 hitting percentage.
"I thought that Carly (Jenson) did a phenomenal job when she was called upon," Johnson-Lynch said. "She hit .278 which is what you would want from an outside hitter. Our players and coaching staff have a lot of confidence in her and I think that showed tonight."
After the Hockaday injury, Iowa State continued to hold the lead until the Gators (1-0) used an 8-2 run to take the opening frame 25-22.
The Cyclones jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the second but Florida again responded with a big run, this one a 10-1 response, to gain control of the set. Iowa State closed the gap to two on numerous occasions, but the Gators had a response each time.
The Gators went into the break up 2-0 after hitting .271 and holding the Cyclones to a .113 mark. Kristy Jaeckel was leading Kentucky with seven kills and the intermission.
The third set was all Iowa State, with the Cyclones hitting .476 en route to a 25-10 win.
The Cyclones led the fourth set 16-14, but Florida stormed out of a television timeout and scored five in a row on its way to a 25-20 win.
The Cyclones were paced by Victoria Henson's 11 kills and Jamie Straube's 10. Henson notched her 18th career double-double with a team-high 13 digs. Ashley Mass tied the school record with her 93rd career match with double-figure digs, finishing with 12.
The Gators balanced attack was led by Callie Rivers 10 kills. The Gators also held an 11-9.5 edge in blocks.
The Cyclones will be back in action Sunday at 2 p.m. against No. 14 Kentucky.
