AMES, Iowa? The Iowa State soccer team has been in preseason training camp for six days and head coach
Wendy Dillinger's youthful squad has already made an impressive impression on the third-year Cyclone leader.
“I'm really excited with how camp has gone,” Dillinger said. “From the first day we stepped on the field the speed of play and competitive nature of practice has been really high. I feel the level of play has jumped tremendously. The newcomers have added a lot to a solid returning group.”

For Dillinger to be excited about what she has seen from the group of newcomers is important because the 2010 Cyclone squad will feature the largest freshman class in the Big 12 Conference this fall with 14. Furthermore, Iowa State will have just two seniors (
Jordan Bishop and
Ashley Costanzo) to lean on for experience.
Despite the lack of experience on the team, Dillinger said the leadership has been impressive in the first week of camp."
“Ashley (Costanzo) and Jordan (Bishop) have always worked really hard and are passionate about the game, so they have continued to be great leaders,” Dillinger said. “Mary Kate (McLaughlin) has been a strong leader and
Emily Hejlik has stepped up big time in a leadership role and is doing very well.”
The general culture of the squad is something Dillinger also noted has made an impression on her.
“The culture of the team has been great,” she said. “Everyone has positive attitudes, and the chemistry of the group is really strong. A lot of players have come from clubs and teams that play a similar style to us, and they are technically sound. The players are from all over the country but they have a lot of similar styles, so they have come together well.”
The Cyclones will continue to train multiple times a day until the season-opener Aug. 20 at 6:30 p.m. against Drake at the ISU Soccer Complex.
