WACO, Texas - 10th-ranked Iowa State had five players with double-digit digs and rallied after dropping the first set to defeat Baylor, 3-1 (21-25, 25-20, 25-22, 25-19), Wednesday evening at the Ferrell Center. The win, Iowa State's 11th regular season road win in a row, improves the Cyclones to 9-2 overall and 2-1 in Big 12 play.
Ashley Mass led the Cyclones defensively with 21 digs and Caitlin Mahoney posted a career-high 19 in the match. Victoria Henson posted 16 digs to go along with her match-high 18 kills and Carly Jenson also posted her third-straight double-double with 15 kills and 15 digs. Alison Landwehr was the other Cyclone in double-figures, finishing with 49 assists and 12 digs.
The Cyclones hit .261 as a team, outlasting Baylor, who hit .250 to become the first Iowa State opponent to hit over .225 this season.
The Cyclones dropped the opening set 25-21 after getting out hit .271-.120. Iowa State led early but Baylor charged back and took its first lead at 9-8. The Bears gained separation in the set, which included 57 total digs, after tallying three points in a row to go up 17-14. Henson led the Cyclones with four kills and Allison King had four for the Bears.
The Cyclones took the second set, which featured 15 ties, 25-20 to even the match at 1-1. Iowa State hit .297 in the set, getting five kills from Henson. The set was back-and-forth until the Cyclones scored three straight, the last of which came on a Jenson kill, to go up 23-20. Iowa State ended up tallying the final five points of the set, including a kill by Straube that captured the set.
Iowa State fended off Baylor to take the third set 25-22.
The Cyclones jumped out to a quick 8-2 lead, but Baylor was able to close it to two points at 12-10. The Cyclones then increased their lead to four at 14-10 on back-to-back kills from Jenson and Straube and held the Bears off the rest of the way to go up 2-1.
In the fourth, Baylor cruised to a 13-7 lead but the Cyclones ripped off an 8-0 run and held the Bears off to take the set 25-19. Debbie Stadick had three kills down the stretch to thwart any chances of Baylor forcing a fifth set.
Baylor was led by Ashlie Christenson's 17 kills and Caitlyn Trice's 24 digs.
Iowa State returns home Saturday to host Oklahoma at Ames High School. First serve is scheduled for 2 p.m.
