AMES, Iowa - Led by junior Carly Jenson's 10 kills and 12 digs, 10th-ranked Iowa State defeated the Oklahoma Sooners, 3-0 (25-13, 25-19, 25-23), Saturday at Ames High School. With the win, Iowa State improves to 10-2 overall and 3-1 in Big 12 play.
The match marked Jenson's sixth double-double performance of the season and extended her current double-double streak to four matches.
Victoria Henson was business as usual Saturday, racking up 17 kills. Henson has been in double figures in all 12 matches this season and 20-straight dating back to the 2009 season. Jamie Straube added 10 kills for the Cyclones and Ashley Mass contributed 16 digs.
"I thought we got a lot of production out of a lot of players," Iowa State coach Christy Johnson-Lynch said. "Our outsides continue to put up huge numbers. Victoria hit .429 and that was against two blockers most times. Carly had another great night with yet another double-double."
The only hitch for the Cyclones came in the third set as the Sooners (10-4, 2-1 Big 12) came out of the locker room looking to force a fourth set.
"I thought we played a good half of a match," Johnson-Lynch said. "We were starting to get a little complacent and were not as sharp the second half. I was pleased with how we came out and executed. Offensively, we had some chances to get some huge kills and we were hitting the tape. "
The Cyclones wasted no time in the first set, leading by as many as 11 behind five kills from Straube and 13 assists from sophomore Alison Landwehr.
Oklahoma stayed close in the second set but fell prey to poor hitting, scoring only 12 kills in 36 total attempts.
"I think the way we matched up with them offensively was a good thing for us," Johnson-Lynch said. "They had some smaller left side blockers and we were able to take advantage of that."
Iowa State hits the road next week, heading to Austin, Texas to face the Longhorns at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
