AMES, Iowa - Jamie Straube had a career-high 15 kills and hit a career-best .545 to lead No. 12 Iowa State past UW-Milwaukee, 3-0 (25-15, 25-14, 25-18), Friday afternoon at Ames High School. With the win, Iowa State improves to 2-1.
The Cyclones hit .400 as a team for the first time in 52 matches, last accomplishing the feat on Oct. 15, 2008 against Texas Tech. Victoria Henson was also in double-digits with 10 kills and no errors on 21 swings for a .476 hitting percentage. Kelsey Petersen joined the action with eight kills and just one error for a .700 hitting percentage.
The Cyclones' defense was superb, holding Milwaukee (2-4) to a .133 mark. Ashley Mass led Iowa State with seven digs, snapping her 24-match streak of consecutive matches in double figures. The senior All-American has now been in double-digits in 94 of her 97 career starts at libero.
The Cyclones hit .290 in the opening stanza but held the Panthers to a -.037 hitting percentage. Straube was the key in the set, ripping seven kills as Iowa State overcame a slow start that saw Milwaukee tally the first three points of the match. The Cyclones went on to win the set 25-15.
In the second, Iowa State's offense was unstoppable. The Cyclones hit .552 as a team en route to the 25-14 win.
The Cyclones used 13 players in the final set and went on to win 25-18. Iowa State hit .367 in the frame, with Tenisha Matlock and Taylor Knuth each getting three kills off the bench.
Alison Landwehr dished out 43 assists in the win.
The Panthers were led by Natalie Schmitting, who had seven kills. Morgan Potter finished with a match-high nine digs.
The Cyclones will meet North Dakota State at 6:30 p.m., following the FIU/South Dakota State match.
