AMES, Iowa - Senior forward Jamie Vanderbeken scored 21 points and made a career-high seven three-pointers as the Iowa State Cyclones (14-4, 1-2 Big 12) beat the Baylor Bears (12-4, 2-1 Big 12), 72-57, for their first conference win of the season in front of a crowd of 11,734 at Hilton Coliseum on Saturday. The win improves Iowa State to 9-0 against the Bears in Ames.
Iowa State's offense never faltered as the team shot 50 percent from the field and connected on 14 treys, the most in a game this season. Iowa State finished 14-of-25 from beyond the arc, a 56 percent connection rate, and the highest of the year.
Junior Scott Christopherson, who had 17 points, made five 3-pointers on the day. Christopherson grew his streak to 20-straight games with a 3-point basket, the third-best streak in Cyclone history. The game is the first of the year in which two Cyclones hit five or more 3-point shots in a game.
Diante Garrett was the third Cyclone to score in double digits on the day, posting 16 points and tied a career-best 11 assists for his second double-double of the season.
The Cyclones rallied from eight down in the first half, going on a 25-10 run to end the half and take a 39-32 lead into the locker room. Baylor's LaceDarius Dunn had 12 points to lead all scorers in the first 20 minutes while Jamie Vanderbeken led Iowa State with 11.
The Bears never caught up in the second half, coming within one on a 3-pointer from Dunn at the 16:16 mark before the Cyclones took control and put away the win. Dunn finished with a Baylor-best 20 points.
Next up for the Cyclones is a trip to Oklahoma State for an 8 p.m. match up on Wednesday Jan. 19.
