TEMPE, Ariz. – The Iowa State tennis team had a bumpy start to their spring season today, starting opposite of the No. 20 ranked Sun Devils. Arizona State swept ISU in both doubles and singles play.
"It was the first one out," head coach Armando Espinosa said. "Hopefully we got some of the nerves out of the way."
Cyclone senior Liza Wischer came close against Sianna Simmons, being outdistanced 6-3, 7-6 (1) in singles play. Wischer, along with Erin Karonis, dueled 48th-ranked doubles pair Michelle Brycki and Hannah James, falling 8-1.
Jenna Langhorst came back after a 6-1 defeat against Hannah James with a game score of 5-7, going on to lose the match 10-4 in the third set. Langhorst and Marie-Christine Chartier faced Ashlee Brown and Sianna Simmons and were ousted 8-2 in doubles.
The third Cyclone pair, Tessa Lang and Maria Macedo, kept it close in doubles against Kelcy McKenna and Jacqueline Cako, sinking with a score of 8-6. Espinosa said that the girls are going to focus on intensity in the coming matches.
"Tomorrow will definitely be a better day," Espinosa said. "We need to have a short memory and move on."
