AMES, Iowa - No. 5 Texas A&M and center Danielle Adams in particular were good enough Saturday to snap Iowa State's 19-game Hilton Coliseum win streak and beat the No. 20 Cyclones, 60-51. Adams had 25 points and 12 rebounds to counter Iowa State's Kelsey Bolte's 25 points and career-high 12 boards for the Cyclones. Iowa State is 13-5 overall and 1-3 in the Big 12 Conference. Texas A&M, which scored its first- ever win in Hilton Coliseum, improves to 17-1 overall and 5-0 in the Big 12.
Bolte's performance makes her the only conference player with at least 20 points in the first four games of the Big 12 season. It was the third double-double of her career. But Adams scored inside and hit four threes to lead Texas A&M. The contest was Iowa State's first loss at home since falling to No. 9 Nebraska on Jan. 9, 2010.
Texas A&M turned up the pressure in the opening moments of the second half and forced five Iowa State turnovers while building a 40-30 lead with 13 minutes left in the game. A nifty Lauren Manfield drive along the baseline for a reverse layup and an offensive rebound and bucket underneath for Hallie Christofferson made it 42-34 with 10:50 left in the game. But a three by Aggie Maryann Baker pushed the Texas A&M lead to 53-41 with 5:57 remaining.
Iowa State fought back and when Chassidy Cole scored underneath it closed the gap to 56-51 with 1:30 remaining. But the Cyclones did not score again. Four Texas A&M free throws in the last 39 seconds sealed the win for the Aggies.
Iowa State set a deliberate pace from the start of the game. A Mansfield drive to the basket followed by a put-back by Bolte of her own miss got the Cyclones off to an 8-3 lead with 15:35 left in the first half. Texas A&M scored but one bucket in the first five minutes of the game on seven tries. When Bolte hit a pair of baseline jumpers, Iowa State had its biggest lead of the game, 15-10 with 10:33 left in the first half.
The Cyclones had trouble with Adams, whose three straight baskets in 2:14 put the Aggies ahead 16-15 with 7:56 left in the first half. Adams scored on a layup to give Texas A&M a 21-17 advantage with 6:15 remaining. Bolte hit a pair of shots late and Texas A&M led 29-26 at the half.
Mansfield finished the game with 13 points. Iowa State held Texas A&M to 37.9 percent shooting for the field, the 16th time in 18 games ISU's opponent has shot under 40 percent for a game.
Iowa State plays at Nebraska Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. (CST) in Lincoln, Neb.
