Cyclones Fall To Oregon, 5-2

EUGENE, Ore. - Iowa State's Simona Cacciuttolo and Maria Fernanda Macedo claimed singles wins but the Cyclones were unable to overcome Oregon Friday afternoon, falling 5-2 to the Ducks at the Student Tennis Center.

Cacciuttolo started her day teaming up with Erin Karonis at No. 2 doubles to defeat Julia Metzger and Rebea Stueckemann, 8-4, for the Cyclones' lone doubles win. The sophomore from Los Andes, Chile then picked up a singles win with a straight-set victory over Stueckemann, 6-4, 7-5.

"I am very happy with how Simona competed today," head coach Armando Espinosa said. "She played extremely well. There are a couple of things she still needs to work on, such as playing at a high level for an entire match. She got off to some good starts but then slowed down a bit and tennis is such a game of momentum you have to keep it going. But overall, she did a good job for us today."

Maria Fernanda Macedo beat Oregon's Julia Metzger, 7-6 (8-6), 6-1 at No. 2 singles for the Cyclones' other point.

The Cyclones had opportunities to earn the doubles point but fell short. The duo of Tessa Lang and Macedo dropped a hard fought 9-7 decision at No. 1 doubles and Jenna Langhorst and Marie-Christine Chartier fell 8-5 at No. 3 doubles to the Ducks' Siobhan Cavan and Trudie du Toit.

"I thought that our doubles teams played well and we had a chance to win the point but came up just short," Espinosa said. "We are starting to get things worked out and are seeing which players work well together. I'm pleased with the progress we are making."

The Cyclones return to action Saturday against Montana at 3 p.m. (CST) at the Student Tennis Center.
