EUGENE, Ore. – Iowa State tennis came out on top Saturday afternoon with a 6-1 win over the Montana Grizzlies at the Student Tennis Center. This marks the Cyclones' first spring season team win as they improve to 1-3 this season.
“We played really well,” head coach
Armando Espinosa said. “Our first win of the season is always good.”
All three Iowa State pairs triumphed in doubles play, with
Erin Karonis and
Simona Cacciuttolo defeating Montana's Heather Davidson and Ashley Mackey 8-1.
Emma Waites and
Liza Wischer won 8-4 against Lauren Gibson and Constance Alexander, and the third pair,
Tessa Lang and Maria Macedo, overtook Whitney Palusch and Amanda Bran 8-5.
The past two weeks on the road have been helping the Cyclones make decisions for when Big 12 conference play begins.
“We're getting closer and closer to figuring out our doubles pairs,” Espinosa said. “And winning the doubles point today was very good.”
Marie-Christine Chartier shut out her competition, Ashley Mackey, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5 singles.
Jenna Langhorst defeated Lauren Gibson 6-3, 6-3 in the No. 4 spot.
“It was a good effort overall,” Espinosa said. “We played hard and competed well, and we're starting to look better and better.”
Iowa State returns to action Feb. 11, facing Marquette on Friday and Western Michigan Saturday in Milwaukee, Wisc. at the Baseline Tennis Center.
