MILWAUKEE – Iowa State tennis captured the doubles point but lost 5-2 to the Marquette Golden Eagles Friday afternoon. The Cyclone duo of
Tessa Lang and Maria Macedo defeated Marquette's Rachel Hush and Christina Ruiz 9-7, while teammates
Simona Cacciuttolo and
Erin Karonis outlasted Paola Calderon and Roci Diaz, 8-7.
Cyclone head coach
Armando Espinosa was pleased with the team's performance in doubles.
“Historically, we haven't won a lot of doubles points,” Espinosa said. “We had a lot of enthusiasm for that today.”
The momentum established in doubles play did not translate into singles competition, however. Marquette bounced back and claimed five of the six singles matches.
“I've got to hand it to Marquette,” Espinosa said. “After we won the doubles, they came out and did not stop fighting.”
Cacciuttolo posted Iowa State's sole singles victory, defeating Chelsea Utting 6-4, 6-0.
The Iowa State coaching staff is pleased with the Chilean sophomore's performance this season.
“Every time there is a match, she shows up and finds a way, whether it's a tough or easy match, to come out and perform,” Espinosa said. “We're very happy with how Simona is continuing to play.”
The Cyclones will be back in action tomorrow at noon (CST) in Helfaer Tennis Stadium to face Western Michigan University. It will be the second time in 2010-11 that the teams will compete, after the Cyclones participated in WMU's Fall Invitational in November.
