MILWAUKEE, Wis. – Iowa State came out on top over the Western Michigan Broncos Saturday afternoon at Marquette's Helfaer Tennis Stadium. The Cyclones dominated with a score of 6-1 in both singles and doubles play.
Head coach Armando Espinosa credited the team's energy and enthusiasm for the win.
“We came out hard, even though we lost yesterday,” Espinosa said. “The morale of our team was still good.”
Winning the doubles point for the second day in a row reflects how the Cyclones have worked to find perfect pairings. Iowa State has used the beginning of its spring schedule to try out different duos, and the past two matches show that the Cyclones are confident in their selections.
“The doubles are finally coming together,” Espinosa said. “Winning both of the doubles is a thing we haven't done in a long time, and it's a great thing coming out of this weekend.”
Five of the six singles matches were taken by Iowa State, and two of the three Cyclone pairs triumphed in doubles. Espinosa said that the final score could have been closer, but his student-athletes closed out their competition with lots of energy.
“Western Michigan is a good team,” Espinosa said. “They played really hard and they did a good job fighting back. But our team responded really well in the end, and it will be nice to travel home after a win.”
