UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Iowa State (4-4) tennis team posted a 4-3 win over Big Ten foe Penn State Saturday afternoon at the Sarni Tennis Center.
The Cyclones rode the momentum from last weekend's win against Western Michigan to defeat the Nittany Lions. In singles, Maria Macedo overcame Carmen Sandor 6-3, 6-2 at the No. 2 position, and teammate Tessa Lang scored 6-4, 6-4 win over Amy Simidian at No. 3. With the match tied 3-3, Liza Wischer clinched the team victory for the Cyclones with an impressive 6-3, 6-1 win over Maria Prishlyak.
“It was a great match,” Iowa State head coach Armando Espinosa said. “Penn State fought hard. At 3-3, it's a little bit of pressure, and we did very well.”
Iowa State continued to impress in doubles competition, with two of the three pairs coming out on top. Tessa Lang and Maria Macedo went 8-3 over Petra Januskova and Fernanda Perrotta at No. 1 doubles. No. 2 duo Erin Karonis and Simona Cacciuttolo defeated Carmen Sandor and Amy Simidian with the same score.
“Doubles are starting to go our way,” Espinosa said. “I think that the doubles wins have definitely helped our confidence in singles.”
The Cyclones will play host to North Dakota and Northern Iowa in the home opener at Ames Racquet and Fitness on Friday Feb. 25. Iowa State faces UND at 9 a.m. and UNI at 3:30 p.m.
