AMES, Iowa - The Iowa State women's tennis team (5-4) defeated North Dakota (3-3), 5-2, in its home opener Friday morning at the Ames Racquet & Fitness Club. The Cyclones host Northern Iowa this afternoon at 3:30 p.m.
"It was a good way to start the home season," Iowa State head coach Armando Espinosa said. "We are certainly happy that we were able to get the win and get some players that hadn't played yet this spring some time on the court."
Iowa State opened by winning the doubles point for the third meet a row. Simona Cacciuttolo and Erin Karonis defeated the North Dakota duo of Erin Kappers and Callie Ronkowski, 8-1.
Marie-Christine Chartier and Jenna Langhorst won at No. 2 doubles over the Fighting Sioux's Stephanie Petsis and Hallie Welk by an 8-2 tally. Emma Waites and Liza Wischer completed the doubles sweep with an 8-1 win over Chelsey Galipeau and Megan Sween.
In singles action, Maria Fernanda Macedo beat Kappers at No. 1 singles in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2. Chartier played to a 6-2, 6-0 win over Ronkowski in the No. 3 slot.
At No. 4 singles Emma Waites picked up a hard fought win over Hallie Welk. Waites took the first set 6-1 and won the second set, 7-6 (8-6), in a tiebreaker.
Nikki Reber picked up Iowa State's other win in the match, beating UND's Stephanie Biehn, 6-3, 6-0, at No. 5 singles.
