AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State tennis team (7-4) enjoyed its first sweep of the season against the UMKC Kangaroos (1-5) this morning at the Ames Racquet and Fitness Center, beating the Kangaroos 7-0.
Iowa State started off on the right foot by winning the doubles point with
Tessa Lang and Maria Fernanda Macedo defeating Eva Dalvai and Chelsea Horner 8-1.
Marie-Christine Chartier and
Jenna Langhorst dropped the No. 2 doubles spot to Kangaroo duo Laura Bouet and Suzan Lisenby 8-3, so it came down to
Nikki Reber and
Emma Waites to seal the Cyclone victory at the No. 3 spot. The duo beat Jessica Ball and Gabriela Pintos in a close 8-6 decision that secured Iowa State's capture of the doubles point.
Even with this doubles victory under their belts, the Cyclones are looking for more consistency during sets.
“It was like a roller coaster out there,” head coach
Armando Espinosa said. “We want to make sure we're a little more consistent with our attitudes and mentality.”
Iowa State performed strongly in singles competition today. Senior
Erin Karonis took the No. 1 spot scoring a 6-4, 6-1 win over Dalvai, and her teammate Chartier, a junior, sealed a victory at No. 3 over Kangaroo Chelsea Horner 6-2, 6-0. Sophomores
Simona Cacciuttolo and
Jenna Langhorst were at spots two and four, respectively, and enjoyed individual victories as well.
Cacciuttolo won over Laura Bouet 6-4, 6-2 and
Jenna Langhorst was a 6-0, 6-2 winner over UMKC's Jillian Yanominich.
“It was a good day,” Espinosa said. “But to keep winning singles, we need to continue to focus at the task on hand.”
Rookies
Nikki Reber and
Emma Waites saw singles action, with Waites controlling the No. 5 spot. Reber came back after a four-point deficit in her second set to clinch the No. 6 spot, scoring 6-4, 5-7 against Jessica Ball.
“It was good to see them out there,” Espinosa said of the young student-athletes. “We want to give them as much experience as possible, and I'm happy that we can have our young people out there and still get the win.”
Iowa State will continue play this evening when the team travels to Des Moines to meet Drake for duals at 4:30. The Cyclones will then return to the Ames Racquet and Fitness Center Saturday to host Air Force.
