AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State tennis team (9-4) played host to Air Force (11-3) this afternoon and maintained its winning streak, beating the Falcons 7-0 at the Ames Racquet and Fitness Center. This win was the third consecutive sweep for Iowa State in the spring season.
“It feels pretty good,” Cyclone coach
Armando Espinosa said. “In singles, we're definitely playing better.”
The Cyclones captured the doubles point to start the match off right, dominating in two of the three matches. No. 1 duo
Tessa Lang and Maria Fernanda Macedo won 8-2 over Melissa Cecil and Tahlia Smoke. Soon after,
Erin Karonis and
Simona Cacciuttolo overcame Falcon pair Anastasia Hueffner and Christen Monreal 8-5 at the No. 2 position.
Despite the team's win, Espinosa and the Cyclones are looking to improve their doubles competition, which means focusing on winning all three matches.
“It's nice to win two out of the three, but we really need to give ourselves the opportunity to take all three,” Espinosa said.
Three of the six Cyclone singles competitors played for three sets, including
Jenna Langhorst who enjoyed a hard-fought victory over Anastasia Hueffner at the No. 5 slot, winning 4-6, 6-1, 6-2. At No. 1 singles, Karonis defeated Christen Monreal in three sets 6-2, 7-6, 6-1, and her teammate Macedo also took her opponent to three sets, winning 6-1, 2-6, 6-0 over Tahlia Smoke.
“Air Force fought hard,” Espinosa said. “They were yelling and screaming, and there were times when they were right there, but our girls finished strong.”
Tessa Lang swiftly defeated her opponent, Melissa Cecil, 6-3, 6-3 in the No. 3 slot in singles competition, and
Simona Cacciuttolo took the No. 4 spot 6-2, 6-4 over Sarah Cassman.
Liza Wischer wrapped up the day's play by sealing the sixth Cyclone victory 6-3, 6-4 over Megumi Voight at No. 6.
Iowa State is on the road next weekend, and the Cyclones will travel to Tulsa, Okla. for duals on Sunday, March 13.
