TULSA, Okla. - Iowa State (9-5) was defeated by 22nd-ranked Tulsa (14-2), 7-0, Sunday on the road at the Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Okla. The the loss marked the end of non-conference competition for Iowa State, which opens Big 12 play by hosting Oklahoma and Oklahoma State next weekend at Ames Racquet and Fitness.
Iowa State head coach
Armando Espinosa said that the tough loss came from small missteps that translated over onto the scoreboard.
“I think we kind of let some of the matches slip away,” Espinosa said. “They are certainly good, but we missed opportunities in the doubles and singles, and a team that is that good is not going to let you get away with it.”
Today's match was Iowa State's first outdoor competition for the season, and the road loss has helped set up what the Cyclones will work in practice this week. Iowa State will focus hard on both singles and doubles play, with Big 12 competitors Oklahoma State and Oklahoma are next on the agenda.
“We're going to have to change some things come Big 12,” Espinosa said. “We're going to have to be a lot better outside and get used to the conditions, because that's how a lot of conference matches will be played.”
