AMES, Iowa - The No. 15 Iowa State volleyball squad brought its defense Saturday night at Hilton Coliseum as the Cyclones knocked off the Baylor Bears 3-0 (25-19, 25-14, 25-18). The crowd of 2,170 saw Iowa State improve to 15-3 and keep its spot atop the Big 12 with a 6-1 conference record. The Bears drop to 15-7 overall and 3-4 in the conference play in 2011.
"I think we got into a really good grove, we had not gotten into a good grove for a few matches," Iowa State head coach Christy Johnson-Lynch said. "Our block was pretty dominant and we played great defense behind it. We were able to hold them to a pretty low hitting percentage so I was real excited about our blocking defense."
The Cyclones posted 13 team blocks on the night while restricting the Bears to a .023 hitting percentage. The 13 blocks were the most for Iowa State's since its five-set win at Nebraska in 2009 when they posted 16 blocks. Tenisha Matlock was Iowa State's top blocker with a career-best eight block assists. Carly Jenson posted a solo block and five block assists while Kelsey Petersen added three block assists.
"Blocking is most difficult when you are rushed and you only get there just as they are hitting the ball," Johnson-Lynch noted. "I thought we made great moves that the hitters did not see coming."
There were 10 Cyclones posting kills on the evening, with Jenson, Matlock and Hannah Willms leading the way with eight kills apiece. Kristen Hahn led Iowa State with 17 digs while Jenson and Alison Landwehr each posted 11. Landwehr earned a double-double as she also contributed 28 assists.
"I thought all of the people that came off the bench tonight did outstanding," Johnson-Lynch said. "They executed the game plan exactly as we planned tonight.
Baylor was ready to go in game one, jumping out to an early 4-0 lead. The Cyclones got it together, posting a 7-0 run that turned a 12-7 deficit into a 14-12 Iowa State advantage. The Cyclones were able to pull ahead late, finally putting the Bears away after an attack error by Adri Nora.
Game two was all Cyclones as the home team allowed two early ties but led the rest of the way behind four kills each from Matlock and Willms. The duo headed to halftime with six kills apiece and Matlock had a match-high five block assists.
After being held to four kills in the first two games, Jenson brought the Cyclones home in game three, posting a game-high four kills as the Cyclones hit .310 while restricting the Bears to a .021 hitting clip for the set.
The Bears were led offensively by Briana Tolbert's eight kills followed by six kills off the bench from Nicole Bardaji. Libero Allison King led the Baylor defense with 22 digs while Qian Zhang posted 11.
The Cyclones have their second bye in as many weeks on Wednesday before heading south to Texas A&M next Saturday for a 6:30 p.m. CDT first serve.
