CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - The Iowa State soccer dominated possession in its match against Southeast Missouri State Sunday afternoon, and the Cyclones were rewarded with a pair of second-half goals en route to a 2-0 win. Sophomore Emily Goldstein led the Iowa State attack, as the midfielder had a hand in both Cyclone tallies with a goal and an assist. The win improved Iowa State to 7-8-1 while Ohio-Valley-Conference-leading Southeast Missouri State dropped to 10-4-1 on the campaign.
After outshooting the Redhawks 10-2 in the first half, the Cyclones scored 8:48 after halftime off the head of Mary Kate McLaughlin. The senior headed the ball into the back of the net off a corner kick served by Goldstein. The goal was McLaughlin's second of the season, and Goldstein delivered her fourth assist of 2011.
The Cyclones did not relent in their pressure after the opening goal and had numerous chances to put the match out of reach. Goldstein provided the insurance goal with 2:47 left in the match. The Orange County, Calif., native turned nicely near the penalty spot and drilled in a right-footed shot past Southeast Missouri State goalkeeper Ashton Aubuchon. Sophomore Brittany Morgan and junior Megan Long helped set up Goldstein's strike and were credited with assists.
"Emily played well today, especially in the second half," Iowa State head coach Wendy Dillinger said. "She was very active on the offensive end today. We need to keep getting her the ball because when she is involved good things happen, and we did that today."
Goldstein's goal was her first of the campaign and her three-point effort was a season high.
Iowa State utilized its formula for success in the match by scoring the first goal. The Cyclones are now 7-0 when scoring the match's opening tally.
"We played well today," Dillinger said. "We did a good job of controlling the ball throughout the game. We were disappointed at halftime to not have scored. We made having more urgency in the box a point of emphasis at halftime, and we were much better at it in the second half. It was good to finish some chances today because we have been creating a lot of them the last few weeks with little to show for it."
Sophomore goalkeeper Maddie Jobe played the full 90 minutes for the Cyclones and notched three saves. Jobe earned her fifth shutout of the season, and she moved into a tie for third all-time in program history in clean sheets with nine. Jobe's season record improved to 4-2-1.
"Maddie played well today," Dillinger said. "She didn't have to make any spectacular saves but she came out and snagged some balls that could have caused us problems if she would not have."
Statistically, Iowa State clearly controlled the match. The Cyclones won the shots battle at 23-5 while also delivering seven shots on goal to Southeast Missouri State's three. Iowa State also edged the Redhawks in corner kicks at 5-2.
Iowa State's next match is Friday against Texas Tech. The Big 12 Conference match will start at 6:30 p.m. CDT at the ISU Soccer Complex.
