AMES, Iowa - No. 16 Iowa State dropped a five-set heartbreaker to No. 8 Texas, 3-2 (16-25, 25-14, 20-25, 25-21, 8-15), Sunday afternoon in front of 4,929 at Hilton Coliseum. The loss was Iowa State's first in the Big 12 campaign to go to 3-1 in the league, 12-3 overall. The win improves the Longhorns to 9-4 overall and 2-1 in the Big 12.
"I thought we had stretches where we played really well and we had opportunities to go win a game," head coach Christy Johnson-Lynch said. "Game three comes to mind when I thought we had the opportunity to go get it and we never stepped up our game and just let them win that game. For stretches we did some good things, serve tough, play good defense and play pretty good offensively. There were just too many stretches where we didn't fight and didn't step up and play."
After forcing a fifth set with their 25-21 fourth-set win, the Iowa State attack was shut down in the decider, hitting -.056 with six errors in the set. Jamie Straube was the leader of the Cyclone attack in the fifth, converting all three of her attacks into kills. Bailey Webster led Texas in the deciding set with four kills and Haley Eckerman posted three.
Straube led the Iowa State offense on the afternoon with 17 kills at a .533 hitting percentage. The junior also added three block assists to the Cyclone effort.
"She is learning how to take over matches," Johnson-Lynch said. "I thought during the fourth and fifth games, her block was taking over. She is starting to emerge as that kind of player for us. She is really gifted."
Carly Jenson posted another double-double wither her 14 kills and 16 digs. Iowa State also got double-digit dig matches from Kristen Hahn (20), Rachel Hockaday (12) and Caitlin Mahoney (10). Straube was joined by Tenisha Matlock and Kelsey Petersen with three block assists.
After taking an early 5-1 lead in set one, the Cyclones couldn't keep up with Texas as the visitors from Austin over took the home team, led by the freshman Eckerman who scored seven kills. The Cyclones posted no hitting percentage, tying their seven kills with seven errors in set one.
"We looked scared in the first game," Johnson-Lynch stated. "We got blocked early and our hitters got scared and tentative and backed off. We told them to stay aggressive, they are big and physical and we knew they would block some balls and they were very athletic. Even if you get blocked straight down, you have to move on to the next point and continue to be aggressive."
Not going away easily, the Cyclones erupted in game two as Jenson collected seven kills in leading the Cyclones to .395 hitting to even the match at one set apiece. The redshirt junior Hockaday held serve during a 7-0 run by Iowa State to build a 20-10 lead that Texas could not recover from.
Set three continued the dog fight as the teams stayed close from start to finish. Texas led most of the way and pulled out the 25-20 win for a 2-1 match lead. After three sets, Texas middle blocker Rachel Adams had compiled a .533 hitting percentage (9-1-15).
Straube took over for Iowa State in set four, sending in six kills on only nine attacks to lead the Cyclones to the win. While the Cyclones as a team only hit .190 as a team in the set, they restricted the Longhorns to a .175 hitting percentage and forced the Texas attack into seven errors.
In the match, Waterloo native Eckerman led the Longhorn attack with 21 kills while Webster added 16 kills on only 27 attempts for a .593 hitting percentage. Adams contributed with 10 kills, a solo block and five block assists. Libero Sydney Yogi led the Texas defense with 19 digs.
"She (Eckerman) is tremendous," Johnson-Lynch noted. "She is one of the best athletes in the country. Sometimes when you come home it can be tough to play in front of your home crowd. I did not know how she would transition right away but she has different angles she can hit and she is a great player."
On Wednesday the Cyclones are in Manhattan, Kan. to play Kansas State on Metro Sports (Kansas City) at 7 p.m.
